Itävyys, in Finnish, refers to the process by which a seed germinates and begins to grow into a new plant. It is a critical stage in the plant life cycle, signifying the transition from dormancy to active development. For germination to occur, several environmental conditions must be met, including adequate moisture, suitable temperature, and often, the presence of oxygen. Some seeds also require light or specific scarification (damage to the seed coat) to break dormancy.

The process begins when a seed absorbs water, a process called imbibition. This hydration activates enzymes within the seed that begin to break down stored food reserves, providing the energy and nutrients for growth. The embryo, which is the rudimentary plant within the seed, then starts to develop. Typically, the radicle, which will become the root system, emerges first, anchoring the seedling and absorbing water and nutrients from the soil. Following the radicle, the plumule, which will develop into the shoot and leaves, emerges and grows upwards towards light.

The rate and success of germination can vary significantly depending on the plant species, seed viability, and the specific environmental conditions. Factors such as seed age, storage conditions, and the presence of inhibitors can all affect itävyys. Understanding these factors is crucial for successful agriculture, horticulture, and ecological restoration.
