Istutus, in horticultural terms, is the process of placing a plant into its final growing location or transferring a plant from a nursery container to the ground. The term covers both the act of planting and the planted specimen, and it applies to trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs, and other propagules. Istutus aims to establish a healthy root system and stable growth in the new site.

Site selection and soil preparation are fundamental. Choose a location appropriate for the species, with correct light, drainage, and protection from extreme conditions. Prepare the soil by removing weeds, loosening the surface, and incorporating organic matter or compost to improve structure and fertility. Check soil pH if needed and adjust according to the plant’s preferences.

Planting technique varies by plant type. For most species, dig a hole wider and about as deep as the root ball or container. Place the plant so that the root flare sits at or slightly above the soil surface. Backfill gently to avoid air pockets, and firm the soil around the roots. Create a shallow basin around the plant to help watering. If planting bare-root stock, spread roots carefully and avoid crowding.

Aftercare is critical. Water deeply after planting and maintain consistent moisture until establishment. Apply a mulch layer to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the trunk or stem. Stake only if necessary to prevent wind damage. Monitor for several seasons for signs of stress, and adjust care as needed.

Timing can influence success. In temperate climates, spring planting after the last frost and autumn planting before ground freezes are common; bare-root plants are often planted while dormant. Properly executed istutus supports establishment and long-term growth.
