Isomeerisinä is a Finnish term referring to isomers in chemistry. Isomers are molecules that have the same molecular formula but different structural formulas or spatial arrangements of atoms. This means they contain the same types and numbers of atoms, but these atoms are connected or oriented differently.

There are several types of isomerism. Structural isomerism, also known as constitutional isomerism, occurs when isomers have different connectivity of atoms. For example, butane and isobutane (also known as 2-methylpropane) are structural isomers, both having the molecular formula C4H10, but their carbon skeletons are arranged differently.

Stereoisomerism, on the other hand, involves molecules with the same molecular formula and connectivity but different spatial arrangements of atoms. This category includes enantiomers, which are non-superimposable mirror images of each other, and diastereomers, which are stereoisomers that are not enantiomers. Geometric isomerism, a type of diastereomerism, arises from restricted rotation around a chemical bond, often found in alkenes.

The presence of isomerism is crucial in chemistry and biology. Different isomers can exhibit vastly different physical properties, such as boiling point and melting point, as well as chemical reactivity. In biological systems, the specific three-dimensional shape of molecules is often critical for their function, making stereoisomerism particularly important in fields like biochemistry and pharmacology. For instance, many drugs are chiral, meaning they exist as enantiomers, and only one enantiomer may possess the desired therapeutic effect, while the other could be inactive or even harmful. Understanding and identifying isomers is therefore a fundamental aspect of chemical analysis and synthesis.
