Islandingssituasjoner, a Norwegian term, translates to "islanding situations" or "islanding events" in English. It refers to a condition in an electrical power system where a distributed generator (DG) continues to supply power to a localized section of the grid independently of the main power grid. This typically occurs when the main grid experiences a fault or outage.

The primary concern with islanding is safety. If an islanded section of the grid remains energized, it poses a severe risk to utility workers who may assume the line is de-energized and are unaware of the local generation. Therefore, distributed generators are required to have "anti-islanding" protection systems. These systems are designed to detect an islanding condition and rapidly disconnect the DG from the grid to prevent it from supplying power to an isolated section.

While islanding is generally undesirable and a safety hazard, there is also interest in controlled or intentional islanding for enhanced grid resilience. In such scenarios, the grid might be deliberately separated into several smaller, self-sufficient "islands" during a major disturbance. This allows these islands to continue operating with their local generation, minimizing the impact of the larger grid failure. However, managing these intentional islands, maintaining voltage and frequency stability, and synchronizing them back to the main grid when it is restored are complex engineering challenges.
