Isbrytare, or icebreaker, is a ship designed to operate in ice-covered waters by breaking ice to maintain navigable routes. They enable commercial traffic and supply lines in winter seas and often support search-and-rescue operations, harbor access, and scientific missions in polar regions.

Core features include a reinforced hull and a specially shaped bow intended to ride up on ice and fracture it with the vessel’s weight. Some designs push ice with the hull; others use propulsive power to create a channel.
