An irrigator is a person or device involved in irrigation—the application of water to land or fluids to body tissues. In agriculture, an irrigator may refer to someone who operates irrigation equipment or to the equipment itself that delivers water to crops. Modern irrigation involves pumps, pipes, valves, and control systems that apply water to soil in a planned way to conserve water and maximize yields.

Common agricultural methods include sprinkler irrigation, surface irrigation, drip irrigation, and center-pivot systems. Sprinklers emit water through nozzles that simulate rainfall; drip systems deliver water directly to the root zone through emitters; center-pivot systems rotate around a central point to water large fields. Efficient irrigation relies on monitoring soil moisture, weather data, and crop requirements to minimize runoff and salinization.

In medical and dental care, an irrigator is a device that directs a stream of liquid to cleanse a body cavity or wound, or to aid oral hygiene. Oral irrigators, or dental water jets, use pulsating or steady streams of water or mouthwash to remove plaque and debris from between teeth and below the gumline. Nasal and wound irrigators deliver saline or antiseptic solutions to cleanse mucous membranes or wounds; some devices offer adjustable pressure and temperature settings.

History and regulation: irrigation has ancient origins and remains central to agriculture and horticulture.
