Irreversibilitást, a term derived from the Latin "irreversibilis," refers to the characteristic of a process or event that cannot be undone or reversed. Once an irreversible process has occurred, the system cannot return to its original state without external intervention, and even then, the original state may not be fully recoverable. This concept is fundamental in various scientific disciplines, particularly in thermodynamics and cosmology.

In thermodynamics, irreversibility is associated with the increase of entropy. The second law of thermodynamics states that the total entropy of an isolated system can only increase over time, or remain constant in ideal cases where the system is in a steady state or undergoing a reversible process. Real-world processes, such as friction, heat transfer across a finite temperature difference, and mixing of substances, are inherently irreversible. These processes dissipate energy and lead to a more disordered state, making a return to the initial configuration impossible without expending work and further increasing entropy elsewhere.

The notion of irreversibility also extends to cosmology, where the expansion of the universe is considered an irreversible process. As the universe expands and evolves, it moves further away from any potential earlier state. Similarly, events like the formation of stars and galaxies, or the evolution of life, are seen as unidirectional processes. The concept of irreversibility highlights the directional nature of time, often referred to as the "arrow of time," which distinguishes the past from the future and is deeply intertwined with the increasing entropy of the universe.
