Ioniyhdisteillä refers to ionic compounds in Finnish. Ionic compounds are chemical compounds formed by electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions. These ions are typically formed when atoms gain or lose electrons to achieve a stable electron configuration. The atom that loses electrons becomes a positively charged cation, while the atom that gains electrons becomes a negatively charged anion.

The formation of an ionic bond usually occurs between a metal and a nonmetal. Metals, with their relatively few valence electrons, tend to lose them easily to form cations, while nonmetals, with their nearly full valence shells, tend to gain electrons to form anions. For example, sodium chloride (NaCl), common table salt, is formed from sodium (Na+), a cation, and chlorine (Cl-), an anion.

Ionic compounds typically exist as crystalline solids with high melting and boiling points due to the strong electrostatic forces holding the ions together in a lattice structure. They are often soluble in polar solvents like water, where the polar water molecules can surround and separate the ions. In the molten state or when dissolved in water, ionic compounds conduct electricity because the ions are free to move and carry charge. However, solid ionic compounds do not conduct electricity as the ions are fixed in their lattice positions.
