Ioniccharacter is a term used in chemistry to describe the degree to which a chemical bond exhibits ionic character, as opposed to covalent character. It is a continuum rather than a binary property and helps explain bond polarity, reactivity, and the properties of compounds and materials.

Estimating ionic character commonly relies on electronegativity differences. On the Pauling scale, the fraction of ionic character f_ionic can be approximated by f_ionic ≈ 1 − e^(−0.25(Δχ)²), where Δχ is the difference in electronegativity between the bonded atoms. The percent ionic character is f_ionic × 100. Larger Δχ values yield higher ionic character; bonds such as those in many alkali halides are seen as highly ionic, while bonds with small Δχ tend toward covalency. A second approach uses dipole moments: for a diatomic molecule, the observed dipole moment relative to the maximum possible for a fully ionic bond provides a rough measure of ionic character, though this method is sensitive to molecular geometry and environment.

Implications of higher ionic character include greater lattice energy, higher melting and boiling points for ionic solids, and enhanced ionic conductivity when molten or dissolved. In contrast, lower ionic character aligns with more covalent bonding and different physical and chemical properties. Limitations arise because ionic character is an approximate, environment-dependent descriptor; real bonds in polyatomic systems involve complex charge distributions that are not fully captured by a single scalar value.
