iodopropane

Iodopropane refers to any of three chemical compounds with the molecular formula C3H7I. These compounds are organic halides where an iodine atom is bonded to a propane molecule. The three structural isomers are 1-iodopropane, 2-iodopropane, and 1,1-diiodopropane, 1,2-diiodopropane, 1,3-diiodopropane and 2,2-diiodopropane.

2-iodopropane, also known as isopropyl iodide, has the iodine atom attached to the central carbon of the propane chain. It is also a colorless liquid. It can be prepared from 2-propanol and iodine.

These iodopropane isomers are generally soluble in organic solvents but have limited solubility in water. They are often used as intermediates in organic synthesis, particularly in nucleophilic substitution reactions where the iodine atom acts as a good leaving group. For example, they can be used to introduce a propyl group into other molecules. Like many organoiodine compounds, iodopropanes can be sensitive to light and heat, and may decompose over time, releasing iodine.
