Intraocular (intraokular in Spanish) is an adjective describing structures, conditions, or procedures within the globe of the eye. The term is used across ophthalmology to distinguish internal eye processes from external or ocular adnexa.

The eye interior includes the anterior segment (cornea, anterior chamber, iris, lens) and the posterior segment (vitreous body, retina, choroid, optic nerve). Intraocular refers to anything contained within the sclera and the eye's interior spaces, including the chambers and vitreous.

Common terms include intraocular pressure (IOP), which is the fluid pressure within the eye; abnormal IOP can indicate glaucoma. Intraocular inflammation refers to uveitis. Intraocular infections include endophthalmitis. Intraocular foreign bodies can occur after trauma.

Intraocular procedures include intraocular lens implantation during cataract surgery, intravitreal injections that deliver medication into the vitreous, and pars plana vitrectomy to remove vitreous or repair retina. Implants like intravitreal steroids or anti-VEGF agents are used for diseases like AMD or diabetic retinopathy.

Diagnostics include ophthalmoscopy, slit-lamp examination, and imaging such as OCT and ultrasound to assess intraocular structures. Potential risks of intraocular procedures include infection (endophthalmitis), bleeding, cataract progression, or retinal detachment.
