Intersectionality is a theoretical framework for understanding how various social and political identities like gender, race, class, sexuality, disability, and others combine to create unique modes of discrimination and privilege. The term was coined by legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989. Crenshaw used intersectionality to explain how Black women experienced discrimination differently than white women or Black men, as their experiences were shaped by the simultaneous operation of racism and sexism.
