Interosseousmembraani refers to the fibrous sheets that connect adjacent bones in the forearm and the leg. These membranes form important syndesmotic connections between the paired bones, help divide the muscular compartments, participate in load transmission, and provide attachment sites for muscles and ligaments.

In the forearm, the interosseous membrane extends between the radius and ulna. It runs obliquely from the distal part of the radius to the ulna, attaching along the interosseous borders of both bones. The central portion is relatively thin, and the membrane contains openings for small vessels and nerves, notably the anterior interosseous structures. The membrane divides the forearm into anterior and posterior compartments and serves as a critical site for muscular attachments while distributing some axial load from the distal radius to the ulna during weight-bearing.

In the leg, the interosseous membrane spans the tibia and fibula. It travels obliquely downward and laterally from the tibia to the fibula, attaching along the interosseous borders of both bones. This membrane helps maintain the proper spacing of the bones, contributes to the stability of the crural syndesmosis, and forms part of the structure that separates the anterior and posterior leg compartments. It also provides a surface for muscle attachment and contains perforations for vascular and neural structures.

Clinically, disruption of the interosseous membranes can occur in certain traumatic injuries, particularly injuries to the tibiofibular syndesmosis (high ankle sprains). Such injuries can affect load transmission and forearm or leg stability and may require imaging assessment or surgical intervention depending on severity.
