Internet communication refers to the exchange of information between devices over the Internet using standardized protocols and software. It enables services such as email, the World Wide Web, instant messaging, voice and video calls, file transfer, and online collaboration.

Technical basis: The Internet uses a layered, packet-switched architecture known as the Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP). Data is broken into packets, routed across networks by routers toward a destination IP address. Transport layer protocols include TCP, which provides reliable delivery, and UDP, which prioritizes speed. Application layer protocols include HTTP/HTTPS for web traffic, SMTP/IMAP/POP3 for email, FTP/SFTP for file transfer, and various real-time protocols for voice and video. Domain name system (DNS) translates human-readable names to IP addresses.

Communication often follows client-server models, though peer-to-peer architectures also exist. The global network consists of networks operated by Internet Service Providers, data centers, content delivery networks, and enterprise networks, connected by backbone links and peering.

Security and privacy: encryption with TLS/SSL protects data in transit; authentication mechanisms, and firewalls and intrusion detection help protect systems. Privacy concerns include data collection, surveillance, and tracking.

Standards and governance: IETF develops technical standards through RFCs; ICANN coordinates domain names and IP address allocation; W3C and other bodies develop web technologies.

Impact: Internet communication has enabled global information exchange and collaboration but raises challenges such as cybersecurity, digital inclusion, and regulatory considerations.
