Intermodulation, often abbreviated as IM, is a phenomenon that occurs in electronic circuits and systems when multiple signals are present. It results in the generation of new signals at frequencies that are sums and differences of the original signals' frequencies. This effect is particularly relevant in radio frequency (RF) and microwave circuits, where multiple signals can coexist and interact.

The intermodulation process can be understood through the nonlinearities present in electronic components. When two or more signals are applied to a nonlinear device, such as a transistor or a mixer, the device's response is not simply the sum of the individual responses to each signal. Instead, the device generates new signals at frequencies that are combinations of the original signals' frequencies. These new signals are known as intermodulation products.

Intermodulation can have both beneficial and detrimental effects. In some applications, such as in frequency mixing and signal generation, intermodulation is deliberately used to produce desired signals. However, in other cases, intermodulation can lead to unwanted signals that interfere with the desired signals, causing distortion and degradation of performance. To mitigate the effects of intermodulation, engineers employ various techniques. These include using linear amplifiers, employing filtering to remove unwanted intermodulation products, and designing circuits with minimal nonlinearities. Understanding and managing intermodulation is crucial for the design and operation of electronic systems, ensuring that they function reliably and efficiently.
