Interkalált is a Hungarian adjective meaning inserted between layers or between time periods. It describes objects, materials, or structural features that incorporate an additional component placed within spaces of a host structure without creating a uniform replacement of the original framework. The term derives from intercalation, the process of introducing something into gaps in a layered or sequential system.

In chemistry and materials science, intercalated compounds are materials in which guest species occupy the spaces between layers of a host lattice. This can modify properties such as electrical conductivity, electrochemical performance, mechanical strength, and optical behavior. Classic examples include graphite intercalation compounds and various intercalates of transition metal dichalcogenides. Lithium intercalation in graphite is a well-known case, underpinning much of lithium-ion battery technology. Other examples involve ions, gases, or molecules inserted into layered solids.

In biology and medicine, interkalált structures refer to features embedded between cellular components. A prominent example is the intercalated disc, a specialized junction between cardiac muscle cells that coordinates contraction through connections such as gap junctions and desmosomes. The term is sometimes used in Hungarian scientific literature to describe similar inserted connections or anatomical arrangements in tissues.

In linguistics, interkaláció denotes the insertion of an affix or word into another word or phrase. A linguistic element described as interkalált would be one that has been inserted into a larger structure.
