Interfázi is a term used in cellular biology to describe the phase of the cell cycle that precedes cell division. This is a period of growth and preparation for mitosis or meiosis. The interfázi is further divided into three subphases: G1, S, and G2.

The G1 phase, or first gap phase, is a period of intense growth and synthesis of proteins and organelles. The cell increases in size and accumulates the necessary resources for DNA replication.

Following G1 is the S phase, or synthesis phase, where the cell replicates its DNA. Each chromosome is duplicated, resulting in two identical sister chromatids held together by a centromere.

The G2 phase, or second gap phase, is another period of growth and synthesis. The cell continues to grow, and it synthesizes proteins required for mitosis, such as microtubules. Checkpoints within G2 ensure that DNA replication is complete and that any DNA damage is repaired before the cell enters mitosis.

Interfázi constitutes the majority of the cell cycle, with the actual division phases (M phase) being much shorter. It is a crucial period for ensuring that the daughter cells receive a complete and accurate set of genetic material. Errors during interfázi can lead to mutations or aneuploidy, which can have significant consequences for the organism.
