Interfacialilmiöitä, or interfacial phenomena, refer to the physical and chemical processes that occur at the boundary between two different phases. These phases can be solid-solid, solid-liquid, liquid-liquid, liquid-gas, or even solid-gas. The unique behavior observed at these interfaces is a result of the unbalanced forces acting on the molecules or atoms at the boundary compared to those within the bulk of each phase.

Surface tension is a prime example of an interfacial phenomenon, particularly at a liquid-gas interface. It arises because the cohesive forces between liquid molecules are stronger than the adhesive forces between liquid and gas molecules. This creates an inward pull, causing the liquid surface to contract and behave like a stretched elastic membrane. Capillary action, the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of, or even in opposition to, external forces like gravity, is another consequence of interfacial tension and adhesive forces between the liquid and the solid surface of the narrow tube.

Adsorption, the adhesion of atoms, ions, or molecules from a gas, liquid, or dissolved solid to a surface, is a crucial interfacial phenomenon in many applications, including catalysis, chromatography, and water purification. It occurs because the surface of a material often has different chemical properties than its bulk. Wetting and spreading describe how a liquid interacts with a solid surface, influenced by the balance of cohesive forces within the liquid and adhesive forces between the liquid and solid. These phenomena are fundamental to understanding processes in diverse fields such as materials science, chemistry, biology, and engineering.
