Interconverts refers to processes by which two states, forms, or structures transform reversibly into one another. In chemistry, interconversions describe dynamic equilibria among conformers, isomers, tautomers, or stereoisomers, often accompanied by an energy barrier that must be overcome for the transformation to occur. The term emphasizes the reversible nature of the change, in contrast to irreversible reactions that permanently convert a substance into another.

Interconversion mechanisms vary by system. Common routes include rotation around single bonds that changes conformation, ring flips that convert chair and other cyclohexane conformations, and intramolecular proton transfers that shift tautomers. In some cases, interconversion requires breaking and re-forming bonds, such as cis–trans isomerization around a double bond or racemization at a stereocenter. Photochemical or thermal energy can drive these processes, altering rates and equilibria.

The observable consequences of interconverts depend on kinetics relative to the measurement timescale. If interconversion is rapid, signals in spectroscopy or NMR may be averaged. If slow, separate species or distinct signals can appear. Thermodynamically, the ratio of interconvertible forms at equilibrium is governed by the free energy difference between them, while the rate is governed by kinetic barriers.

Applications of interconverts include conformational analysis in organic molecules, understanding reaction mechanisms, and interpreting spectroscopic data. They are central to fields ranging from medicinal chemistry to materials science, where dynamic structural diversity can influence function and properties.
