Intenzitet is a term used to describe the degree or strength of something, often representing how much of a quantity is present or how rapidly a process occurs. In science it denotes the magnitude of a physical quantity, such as energy flow, wave amplitude, or event rates, and is frequently linked to how noticeable or impactful a phenomenon is.

In physics, intensity commonly refers to the amount of energy transferred per unit area or per unit time. For waves and radiation, several related concepts are used: irradiance is the power received per unit area, radiance is the power per unit area per unit solid angle, and radiant intensity is the power emitted per unit solid angle. For a plane wave, intensity is typically proportional to the square of the wave’s amplitude. Common units include watts per square meter (W/m^2) for irradiance and watts per steradian (W/sr) for radiant intensity.

In acoustics, sound intensity is the time-averaged power transmitted per unit area, measured in W/m^2, and it is related to sound pressure. It provides a practical measure of how loud or energetic a sound is and underpins the use of decibels in level descriptions.

Outside physics, intensity appears in statistics as the intensity function of a point process, which describes the instantaneous rate of events over time. In photography and lighting, intensity relates to brightness and is linked to illuminance on a surface, measured in lux.

The term derives from Latin intensitas and is widely used across languages with minor spelling variations, including intensitet or intenzitet. The concept is central to both technical analysis and perceptual interpretation of strength or activity.
