This is achieved through message queuing, transformation, and routing capabilities. Applications send messages to the bus, which then intelligently routes these messages to their intended recipients, often transforming the data format if necessary to ensure compatibility. This allows for greater flexibility and agility in IT development and maintenance.

Common types of integration buses include Enterprise Service Buses (ESBs) and message-oriented middleware (MOM). ESBs offer a broad range of services beyond basic message routing, such as protocol mediation, service orchestration, and transformation. MOM, on the other hand, primarily focuses on reliable message delivery and queuing. The adoption of integration buses is driven by the need to streamline business processes, improve data consistency across systems, and enable real-time information flow, ultimately supporting better decision-making and operational efficiency.
