Instrumentgruppen refers to a classification system used to categorize musical instruments based on their method of sound production. This system is a fundamental concept in music education and ethnomusicology, providing a framework for understanding the diverse world of musical sound.

The most widely recognized instrumentgruppen, often attributed to Curt Sachs and Erich von Hornbostel, divides instruments into four primary categories: idiophones, membranophones, chordophones, and aerophones. Idiophones produce sound through the vibration of the instrument's body itself, such as cymbals, xylophones, and bells. Membranophones create sound by the vibration of a stretched membrane, commonly referred to as a drumhead, as seen in timpani, snare drums, and congas.

Chordophones generate sound through the vibration of strings, which can be bowed, plucked, or struck. This group includes instruments like violins, guitars, and pianos. Aerophones produce sound by causing a column of air to vibrate, typically through blowing. Examples include flutes, trumpets, and clarinets.

While these four categories form the core of the system, some scholars also include a fifth category, electrophones, to encompass instruments that produce sound primarily through electrical means, such as synthesizers and electric guitars, although the inclusion of this category is sometimes debated. The Instrumentgruppen system offers a logical and systematic approach to organizing and understanding the vast array of musical instruments found across cultures and throughout history.
