Insects undergo metamorphosis, a process of transformation from immature to adult forms. This can be complete, with distinct larval, pupal, and adult stages (like butterflies and beetles), or incomplete, where young nymphs resemble smaller versions of adults and molt several times before reaching maturity (like grasshoppers and dragonflies). Their senses are well-developed, with compound eyes that provide a wide field of vision and antennae used for detecting smells and vibrations.

The ecological roles of insects are vast and crucial. They serve as pollinators for many plants, including important food crops. Many are decomposers, breaking down dead organic matter, while others are important food sources for birds, reptiles, mammals, and other invertebrates. However, some insects can be considered pests, damaging crops, structures, or transmitting diseases to humans and animals.
