Insameling is a term used in speculative anthropology and worldbuilding to describe a ritual practice in which individuals create, exchange, and preserve small tokens called insams that record personal milestones, commitments, or acts of solidarity. The ritual emphasizes collective memory, social cohesion, and mutual accountability within a community.

The word combines a prefix suggesting inwardness or entry with a root meaning together, plus the diminutive suffix -eling, a construction common in invented vocabularies. In imagined histories, insameling is associated with early urban centers and later, more diffuse networks, spreading through trade routes and intercultural exchanges.

Practices vary, but common elements include insams being tangible tokens—such as clay tablets, carved shells, or inscribed stones—each bearing a brief record (name, date, event). During designated gatherings, participants present insams, exchange them, and deposit them in a communal or semi-public archive, sometimes called the Ledger of Light. The act may occur at rites of passage, seasonal festivals, or peacemaking ceremonies. Tokens may be kept, renewed, overwritten, or retired as individuals progress through life stages.

Insameling serves to bind individuals to the community and to one another; it can function as a social ledger, a form of memory insurance, or a ritual of reconciliation. Critics within fictional frameworks note risks such as coercive inscription, privacy concerns, or token hoarding that could create status stratification.
