Innrásartegundir, or invasive species, are organisms that have been introduced into a new environment by human action, either intentionally or unintentionally, and whose establishment and spread cause harm. This harm can be ecological, economic, or even to human health. Ecological impacts often involve outcompeting native species for resources, preying on them, or introducing diseases, leading to a decline in biodiversity. Economically, invasive species can damage crops, infrastructure, and fisheries, resulting in significant costs for control and mitigation efforts.

The introduction of invasive species can occur through various pathways. Shipping is a major vector, with organisms hitchhiking in ballast water or attached to ship hulls. For example, the zebra mussel, native to the Caspian Sea, has spread throughout North America and Europe via ballast water, causing extensive damage to water intake systems and native ecosystems. Another common pathway is through the pet trade, where exotic animals released into the wild can establish populations and disrupt local food webs. The Burmese python in the Florida Everglades is a well-known example, preying on native mammals and birds.

Preventing the introduction and spread of invasive species is crucial. This involves stringent regulations on the movement of goods and organisms, public education about the risks of releasing exotic pets, and early detection and rapid response systems. Once established, controlling invasive species can be extremely challenging and often requires a combination of methods, including physical removal, chemical treatments, and biological control agents, though the latter can also pose risks if not carefully managed.
