Inkttransfer is a family of techniques that move ink from a source surface to a receiving substrate to reproduce an image, add texture, or create decorative effects. The term is used in Dutch and German art contexts and spans printmaking, painting, and crafts. It encompasses methods that rely on pressure, solvents, or moisture to lift or relocate ink.

Common approaches include direct transfer by pressure, decalcomanie, acrylic gel-medium transfer, transfer papers, and water-slide decals. Direct transfer relies on rubbing or pressing a prepared inked matrix against a sheet so the ink adheres to the new surface. Decalcomanie involves pressing damp or freshly painted surfaces together to produce a mirrored image when separated. Gel-medium transfers use an acrylic gel to bind ink to a surface; after the gel dries, the original is removed with water, lifting the image onto a new substrate. Transfer papers place a medium between surfaces so pressure transfers the ink. Water-slide decals are printed images on a film that can be dissolved to release and transfer onto glass, wood, or metal.

Applications: used in art and crafts to reproduce or reinterpret imagery, to introduce texture, or to merge multiple images without a full reprint. Limitations include tonal shifts, edge softness, and variability depending on ink chemistry and substrate porosity. Safety: some solvents or fumes may be involved; use proper ventilation.
