Inkes refers to a type of traditional Indian textile dyeing technique. It is primarily practiced in the state of Rajasthan, particularly in the villages of Bagru and Sanganer. The term "inkes" itself is derived from the local dialect and refers to the process of printing with natural dyes onto fabric.

The foundation of the inkes technique lies in the use of natural pigments. The most common dyes employed are derived from plants, roots, and minerals, with indigo, madder, and turmeric being prominent examples. These natural dyes are meticulously prepared and applied to the fabric using wooden blocks carved with intricate patterns.

The process involves several stages. First, the fabric, typically cotton, is prepared through a series of washing and mordanting steps to ensure the dye adheres well and achieves vibrant colors. Then, skilled artisans use the carved wooden blocks to hand-print the desired designs onto the fabric. This block printing is a laborious and precise art form. After printing, the fabric is often further treated with dyes to achieve different shades and effects, and then washed and dried. The resulting textiles are known for their unique aesthetic, characterized by subtle color variations and handcrafted appeal.
