inimõigus

Inimõigus is the Estonian word for human rights. It refers to fundamental rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of their race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. These rights are universal, indivisible, and inalienable.

The concept of inimõigus is rooted in the idea that all individuals possess inherent dignity and worth. International instruments, most notably the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, outline these rights, which include civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. Examples include the right to life, liberty, and security of person; freedom from torture and slavery; freedom of thought, conscience, and religion; and the right to education and work.

In Estonia, inimõigus is protected by the Constitution and various laws. The Estonian Institute for Human Rights is an independent organization that works to promote and protect human rights within the country, often engaging in research, advocacy, and education. The concept of inimõigus is a cornerstone of a just and democratic society, aiming to ensure that all individuals are treated with fairness and respect.
