Inhalerede is the Danish term for substances that reach the respiratory tract through inhalation. The concept is used in pharmacology, toxicology, and occupational health to describe agents delivered by breathing in, whether for therapeutic purposes or as environmental or workplace exposures.

In therapeutic contexts, inhalerede substances are designed to act locally in the lungs or airways. Common examples are bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroids used to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (KOL). Delivery is typically via devices such as metered-dose inhalers, dry powder inhalers, or nebulizers. The goal is rapid onset and high local concentration in the airways while limiting systemic exposure.

Proper use, including priming, correct mouth placement, and breathing pattern, is essential for optimal dosing. Side effects may include throat irritation, cough, and, with inhaled corticosteroids, an increased risk of oral thrush if the mouth is not rinsed after use.

Outside medicine, inhalerede can refer to any substances that are inhaled, including environmental pollutants such as smoke, vapors, gases, or aerosols. These exposures can be benign or harmful, depending on the substance, concentration, and duration of exposure, and are a focus of occupational safety and toxicology.
