Industrial espionage refers to the covert collection of commercially valuable information that provides a competitive advantage. While legitimate competitive intelligence uses public sources and lawful methods, industrial espionage operates outside legal boundaries and often involves deception or coercion.

Common targets include trade secrets (such as formulas, processes, manufacturing methods), product designs, supplier and customer lists, pricing and contract strategies, and strategic plans. Tactics include cyber intrusions, phishing, malware, keylogging, social engineering, and the recruitment or coercion of employees or contractors. Physical methods such as break-ins, concealed cameras, or theft of devices may also occur, as can reverse engineering of confiscated products.

Legal and policy context: Most jurisdictions prohibit stealing or improperly obtaining trade secrets. Notable laws in the United States include the Economic Espionage Act and the Defend Trade Secrets Act; in other countries similar statutes apply. Internationally, IP and trade secret protections are supported by treaties and national laws. Companies mitigate risk with information security programs, access controls, data encryption, employee screening, and incident response; due diligence in mergers and supplier relations; and by conducting lawful competitive intelligence that relies on public information.

Impact and challenges: Industrial espionage can undermine innovation, erode trust in supply chains, and cause financial losses. The rise of digital networks has increased the scale and sophistication of methods, prompting stronger cybersecurity measures and cross-border enforcement. Public awareness and robust IP enforcement remain central to reducing incidence and encouraging legitimate competition.
