Induktivism is a philosophical approach to scientific reasoning that emphasizes the role of observation and experimentation in the formation of knowledge. It posits that general theories and laws are derived from specific instances observed in the natural world. The process typically begins with a collection of empirical data, followed by the identification of patterns or regularities within that data. Based on these observed regularities, a tentative generalization, or hypothesis, is formulated. If this hypothesis is consistently supported by further observations and experiments, it may eventually be accepted as a scientific law or theory.

Key to induktivism is the principle of induction, which is the process of inferring a general conclusion from specific cases. For example, if one observes that every swan encountered is white, one might inductively conclude that all swans are white. However, this approach faces the problem of induction, famously articulated by David Hume. This problem highlights that there is no logical guarantee that future observations will conform to past observations. The fact that all observed swans have been white does not logically necessitate that the next swan observed will also be white.

Despite this philosophical challenge, induktivism remains a fundamental aspect of the scientific method. Scientists routinely gather data, look for patterns, and formulate hypotheses that are then tested through further observation and experimentation. While it does not offer absolute certainty, the inductive process allows for the development of robust and reliable explanations for natural phenomena.
