An induction loop system, also known as an audio frequency induction loop (AFILS) or hearing loop, is a valuable assistive listening technology. It transmits audio signals directly to hearing aids or cochlear implants equipped with a telecoil (T-coil) setting. The system consists of a loop of wire installed around a designated area, such as a room, theater, or counter. An audio processor converts sound into an electrical signal, which is then sent through the loop wire. This creates a magnetic field that is picked up by the hearing aid's telecoil, converting the magnetic signal back into audible sound.

The primary benefit of an induction loop is its ability to reduce background noise and reverberation, which are common challenges for individuals with hearing loss in public spaces. By delivering sound directly to the hearing device, it bypasses the need for the user to strain to hear over ambient noise. This technology is particularly helpful in places where clear communication is essential, such as lecture halls, places of worship, reception desks, and public transportation hubs. Many modern hearing aids are manufactured with telecoils, making induction loop systems a widely compatible solution. For users without telecoil-equipped hearing aids, portable loop receivers can often be provided.
