Induction, sometimes rendered induktion in Swedish, is a term used in several disciplines to describe processes that move from particular observations to general conclusions, or to produce electric currents through changing magnetic fields. In everyday language, it most often refers to one of three domains: logical induction, mathematical induction, and electromagnetic induction.

In logic and epistemology, inductive reasoning draws general conclusions from a finite set of observations. It is central to scientific inference but does not guarantee truth, unlike deduction.

In mathematics, induction is a proof technique used to establish statements about natural numbers. A typical proof shows the statement holds for a base case (often zero or one) and that, if it holds for one number, it also holds for the next. The principle was formalized in the 19th century and remains a fundamental method in number theory and beyond.

In physics, electromagnetic induction describes how a time-varying magnetic flux through a circuit induces an electromotive force (EMF). Discovered by Faraday, it is described by Faraday’s law and is a cornerstone of electric generation, transformers, and induction motors. Lenz’s law determines the direction of the induced current.

Practical uses of induction include induction heating, where alternating current generates eddy currents to heat a conductive material, and induction cooking, which uses the same principle to heat pots directly.

Philosophical discussions of induction address its justification and limits, notably the problem of induction identified by David Hume, which questions the reliability of predicting future events from past experience.
