An indicatorconstituent is a single input variable that forms a building block of a composite indicator. It represents a measurable attribute used to gauge a specific aspect of a broader concept. In composite indicators, multiple indicator constituents are combined to produce an overall score that facilitates comparison across units, over time, or across geographies.

Before aggregation, each constituent is prepared through normalization or rescaling to a common scale, and the direction of desirability is aligned (higher values indicating better or worse depending on the construction).

Constituents are often weighted; common methods include equal weighting or data-driven weights from techniques such as principal component analysis or entropy methods. The final aggregate can be a simple weighted sum, a geometric mean, or another aggregation rule.

Example constituents include life expectancy at birth, mean years of schooling, and gross national income per capita in the Human Development Index. Other fields use environmental or social measures such as CO2 emissions per capita, renewable energy share, or literacy rate.
