Incunabula era refers to the early period of printed books in Europe, roughly spanning from the introduction of movable type in the mid-15th century to the dawn of the 16th century. The term incunabula itself, from the Latin for “swaddling clothes” or “cradle,” is used metaphorically to describe books produced at the cradle of printing. While definitions vary, most scholars place the core period between about 1450 and 1500 or 1501, with some extending the end date into the early 1500s.

During this era, printing technologies transformed the transmission of knowledge. The first incunabula were produced with largely manuscript-influenced layouts, Gothic and early Roman typefaces, and woodcut illustrations. They circulated in Latin and, increasingly, vernacular languages. Paper gradually became the common medium, though parchment remained in use for some texts. Initial imprints often bear colophons that reveal printer names, places, and dates, aiding bibliographic study.

Major printing centers emerged across Europe. Mainz and surrounding regions in Germany were pivotal in the invention’s early spread, while Venice, Paris, Bologna, and other urban centers quickly contributed significant works. Important types included early Roman faces developed in Italy and later adapted in northern centers, alongside characteristic display initials and decorative borders. Texts ranged from scholarly and devotional works to practical manuals and chronicles, reflecting a broad transitional culture from manuscript production to printed book culture.
