Imunodeficiencie refers to a state where the body's immune system is weakened or not functioning properly, leaving it vulnerable to infections and diseases. This can manifest in various ways, from mild susceptibility to frequent and severe illnesses. The immune system's role is to protect the body from pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and when this defense is compromised, these invaders can easily overwhelm the body.

There are two main categories of immunodeficiency: primary and secondary. Primary immunodeficiencies are genetic disorders, meaning they are present from birth and are inherited. These can range in severity and affect different parts of the immune system. Examples include severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) and common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). Common causes include malnutrition, certain medications like chemotherapy drugs or immunosuppressants, chronic illnesses such as HIV/AIDS or cancer, and aging.

Diagnosing immunodeficiencies often involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and various laboratory tests to assess the function and components of the immune system. Treatment strategies depend on the specific type and severity of the immunodeficiency. They can include medications to manage infections, immunoglobulin replacement therapy, and in some cases, bone marrow transplantation for severe primary deficiencies. While some immunodeficiencies can be managed, others pose significant long-term health challenges.
