Implant tissue refers to the biological tissues that interact with implanted medical devices. It includes soft tissues that surround the device and the surrounding hard or connective tissue, depending on the site. In dental implants, the principal focus is the peri-implant soft tissue and the supporting peri-implant bone.

Soft tissue components consist of mucosa, connective tissue, and the epithelial barrier that seals the implant-abutment interface. Hard tissue components encompass the crestal bone and adjacent cortical bone that stabilize the implant within the jaw or other bone.

During healing, soft tissue forms a protective seal around the abutment, while the bone surface integrates with the implant through osseointegration, establishing stability and long-term support.

Clinical relevance: the health of implant tissue influences implant longevity. Inflammation of peri-implant tissues, such as peri-implant mucositis, and progressive bone loss around implants, known as peri-implantitis, are major complications. Evaluation includes clinical probing for pocket depth and bleeding, along with radiographs to assess bone level. Management emphasizes plaque control, regular maintenance, and, when needed, surgical or regenerative procedures.

Research in implant tissue focuses on improving tissue integration through implant surface engineering, bioactive coatings, and regenerative strategies to enhance healing and reduce complications.
