Imperfektivitet, or imperfectivity, is a grammatical aspect that marks actions or states as ongoing, repeated, habitual, or not fully bounded, rather than as completed events. It contrasts with perfectivity, which views events as single, complete, or punctiliously bounded.

Across languages, imperfectivity can be encoded in different ways. Some languages use dedicated verb forms or aspectual markers, while others rely on periphrastic constructions or parallel syntactic patterns. In many Slavic languages and others with strong aspect systems, imperfective and perfective forms form a pair, often through prefixes, infixes, or alternate stems, to distinguish ongoing or repeated activity from completed instances. In non-morphologically rich languages, imperfectivity may be expressed through the use of progressive or habitual constructions, or through the overall context of the event.

Functions of the imperfective include expressing durative or continuous actions (I was reading), habitual actions (She walks to school every day), and iterative or non-specific occurrences (We often visited). Imperfective forms are frequently used to describe background information in narratives, ordinary facts, or situations where the boundaries of the event are left unspecified. Telicity interacts with imperfectivity: imperfective events are typically non-tinal, lacking a defined endpoint, whereas perfective events tend to be telic.
