Without proper impedance matching, a significant portion of the signal's energy can be lost or reflected back to the source, leading to reduced efficiency and distorted signals.

Impedance transformers are commonly used in radio frequency (RF) circuits, audio systems, and transmission lines. In RF applications, they are essential for connecting antennas to transmitters or receivers, as well as for connecting different stages of an RF amplifier. In audio, they can be used to match the impedance of microphones to preamplifiers or to match the output impedance of an amplifier to a loudspeaker. In transmission lines, impedance transformers help to prevent signal reflections at connection points between lines of different characteristic impedances.

The impedance transformation is typically achieved using a transformer circuit. The ratio of the primary to secondary turns in a transformer determines the impedance ratio. For example, a transformer with a turns ratio of 1:2 will transform an impedance from the primary side to the secondary side by a factor of (1/2)^2, or 1:4. Conversely, it will transform an impedance from the secondary to the primary by a factor of 2^2, or 4:1. Various configurations of transformers, including simple wound transformers and stub transformers, can be employed to achieve the desired impedance transformation.
