Immune suppressed refers to a state where the body's immune system is functioning at a reduced capacity. This means an individual is less able to fight off infections and diseases. There are several reasons why someone might be immune suppressed. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), severely damages the immune system. Other conditions like severe malnutrition or certain genetic disorders can also lead to a weakened immune state.

Individuals who are immune suppressed are at a higher risk of developing infections, which may be more severe or persistent than in healthy individuals. They may also be more susceptible to opportunistic infections, which are infections caused by pathogens that typically do not cause illness in people with healthy immune systems. Management of immune suppression often involves careful monitoring, preventative measures against infection, and sometimes therapeutic interventions to support immune function.
