immanentie

Immanentie, or immanence, is a term used in philosophy and theology to denote something that is inherent in, or contained within, a given order of things, as opposed to transcending it. It concerns what is present within the world or within experience rather than beyond it. In Dutch contexts, the term immanentie corresponds to the English “immanence.”

In theology, immanence refers to the belief that the divine pervades creation and may be experienced in the ordinary world. Spinoza is often cited for an immanent conception of God, identified with nature. Other traditions, such as panentheism, hold that while the divine is present throughout the world, it also transcends it. The idea is used to articulate God's proximity to, or presence within, creation rather than as a distant, wholly other being.

In philosophy, immanence is used to describe grounds or principles that are found within the phenomena they explain, rather than in a transcendent source. It has played a central role in continental philosophy, phenomenology, and post-structuralist thought, where authors emphasize continuity between mind and world, or between form and matter. Debates about immanence often contrast it with transcendence and raise questions about access to a supposed noumenal realm or divine beyond.
