Imbibitie, in Romanian usage, corresponds to the phenomenon known in English as imbibition. It is the process by which a liquid is rapidly drawn into a solid, typically a porous or hydrophilic material, due to capillary and adsorption forces, often causing the material to swell. Imbibition can occur with water or other liquids and is influenced by the surface properties and porosity of the solid.

The mechanism involves capillary action and the affinity of the liquid for the solid’s surface. When a dry, hydrophilic material comes into contact with a liquid, wetting lowers the interfacial energy and creates capillary pressure that drives liquid into pores. In many materials, especially porous polymers, gels, clays, and textiles, the uptake is accompanied by physical swelling as the liquid occupies pore space and expands the solid matrix. The rate and extent of imbibition depend on pore size distribution, surface tension, contact angle, viscosity, and temperature.

Biology and materials science provide notable contexts. In seeds, imbibition is the initial step of germination, where dry seeds rapidly absorb water, reactivating metabolism and softening tissues. In gels and hydrogels, imbibition governs swelling behavior and mechanical properties, important for applications in drug delivery and tissue engineering. In geology and engineering, it explains water uptake by porous rocks and clays and affects oil recovery and filtration processes.

A common quantitative framework for capillary imbibition in pores is Washburn’s equation, which relates the imbibed distance to time through material and fluid properties. Imbibition is distinct from simple absorption by diffusion, though both can occur together depending on the system.
