The planet's natural beauty, though stark, is renowned, with vast ice plains and towering frozen mountains. The Jedi Order established a significant presence on Ilum, recognizing its importance for their traditions. They built training facilities and temples to house and protect the kyber crystal deposits.

During the Clone Wars, Ilum became a strategic target for the Confederacy of Independent Systems, who sought to control the kyber crystal supply. The planet was eventually occupied by the Galactic Empire. Under Imperial rule, the kyber crystals were exploited for the construction of the Death Star's superlaser. The Empire's actions led to the devastation of many of Ilum's natural formations and the endangerment of its kyber crystal reserves. Later, the planet would be renamed Illum by the Empire.
