Ilmavesilämpö, also known as air-to-water heat, refers to a type of heat pump system that extracts heat from the outdoor air and transfers it to a water circuit within a building. This water is then used for space heating and often for domestic hot water production. These systems are an increasingly popular renewable energy solution for both new constructions and renovations.

The core components of an ilmavesilämpö system include an outdoor unit, which contains a fan and a heat exchanger, and an indoor unit, which typically houses a pump, expansion tank, and controls. The outdoor unit absorbs heat from the ambient air, even in cold temperatures, through a refrigerant cycle. This heat is then transferred to the water circulating in the building's heating system. The efficiency of an ilmavesilämpö system is measured by its Coefficient of Performance (COP), which indicates the ratio of heat output to electrical energy input.

Ilmavesilämpö systems are well-suited for climates where temperatures do not consistently drop to extreme lows, as their performance can decrease in very cold conditions. They offer a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuel heating systems, reducing carbon emissions and energy costs. Installation is generally less complex and costly than geothermal heat pump systems. Maintenance typically involves regular cleaning of the outdoor unit's air filter and periodic checks of the system's performance.
