Ilmastoituminen refers to the process of adapting to climate change. Unlike mitigation, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adaptation focuses on managing the inevitable impacts of climate change.

Adaptation strategies can be anticipatory or reactive. Anticipatory adaptation takes place before the impacts of climate change are fully felt, while reactive adaptation occurs in response to observed changes. These strategies can also be autonomous, meaning they occur without conscious policy intervention, or planned, which are deliberate policy-driven adjustments.

Examples of adaptation measures include developing drought-resistant crops, building flood defenses, improving early warning systems for extreme weather events, and relocating communities from vulnerable areas. In urban environments, adaptation might involve increasing green spaces to reduce heat island effects or improving drainage systems to cope with heavier rainfall.

The effectiveness of adaptation strategies depends on various factors, including the specific climate impacts, the vulnerability of the system being adapted, and the resources available. Adaptation is a continuous process, as climate change impacts evolve and new information becomes available. It is a crucial component of a comprehensive climate change response, working alongside mitigation efforts to build resilience and ensure sustainable development.
