Ilmaohjaus, literally “air steering” or “air guidance” in Finnish, refers to the methods and systems used to direct, regulate, and optimize the flow of air in a space or across a component. The term is used across several engineering disciplines, including heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), automotive engineering, aerospace, and process technology. In general, ilmaohjaus combines passive design features with active control elements to achieve targets such as comfortable temperature and humidity, adequate indoor air quality, energy efficiency, and safety.

In buildings, ilmaohjaus is a core aspect of HVAC systems. Duct networks, diffusers, louvers and dampers shape the distribution of supply and return air. Variable air volume (VAV) boxes and fans adjust flow rates to occupancy and load. Sensors monitor room temperature, CO2 concentration, humidity, and pressure, while control systems modulate actuators to maintain setpoints. Demand-controlled ventilation aims to minimize energy use while preserving air quality.

In other industries, ilmaohjaus covers aerodynamic and process-control applications: directing cooling air around engines and electronics, steering exhaust flows in manufacturing plants, and guiding smoke or heat disposal in safety-critical situations.

Implementation relies on a combination of hardware, sensing, and control algorithms, ranging from simple proportional–integral–derivative controllers to more advanced model predictive control.
