Ilmamäärämittariin, often translated as air flow meter or mass air flow sensor (MAF sensor), is a crucial component in modern internal combustion engines. Its primary function is to measure the amount of air entering the engine's intake manifold. This measurement is vital for the engine control unit (ECU) to accurately determine the correct amount of fuel to inject for optimal combustion. By understanding the air-fuel ratio, the ECU can ensure efficient fuel consumption, reduced emissions, and proper engine performance.

There are several types of ilmamäärämittariin, with hot-wire and hot-film sensors being the most common. These sensors work by passing a current through a heated element (wire or film). As air flows over the element, it cools it down. The sensor then adjusts the current to maintain a constant temperature. The amount of current required to maintain this temperature is directly proportional to the mass of air flowing through. Another type is the vane-type meter, which uses a flap that is deflected by the incoming air; the position of this flap is then translated into an electrical signal.
