Ilmajäädytysjärjestelmä, known in English as air cooling or air cooling system, is a method of heat removal that uses air as the cooling medium. It is a common and often simple approach for dissipating heat from various devices and environments.

The fundamental principle of air cooling involves circulating ambient air over a heat-generating component or through a space that needs to be cooled. This air absorbs heat from the warmer surface or environment, and then the heated air is typically exhausted and replaced with cooler air. This continuous cycle maintains the temperature within a desired range.

In many electronic devices, such as computers, air cooling is achieved through the use of fans. These fans draw cooler air into the device, direct it over heatsinks attached to heat-producing components like CPUs and GPUs, and then expel the warmer air. Heatsinks are designed with a large surface area, often featuring fins, to maximize the transfer of heat from the component to the air.

Beyond electronics, air cooling systems are widely used in buildings for ventilation and climate control. HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems utilize fans to circulate conditioned air throughout a building. In industrial settings, air cooling can be employed for machinery, engines, and processes where heat generation is significant.

The effectiveness of an air cooling system depends on factors such as the ambient air temperature, the airflow rate, the surface area available for heat exchange, and the thermal properties of the materials involved. While generally less efficient than liquid cooling systems for high-power applications, air cooling remains a popular choice due to its simplicity, lower cost, and ease of maintenance.
