Ilmaanjäähdytys, also known as air cooling, is a method of heat dissipation where heat is transferred from a source to the surrounding air. This process relies on convection and radiation to move heat away. In many common applications, fans are used to accelerate the movement of air across the heat-generating component, thereby increasing the rate of heat transfer. This is a simple and often cost-effective cooling solution.

The effectiveness of ilmaanjäähdytys is dependent on several factors, including the surface area of the component, the temperature difference between the component and the air, and the speed of the airflow. Larger surface areas, typically achieved through the use of heatsinks with fins, allow for more efficient heat dissipation. Higher airflow, whether natural or forced, also enhances cooling performance by bringing cooler air into contact with the hot surface more rapidly and carrying away the heated air.

It is also common in engines, such as those found in cars and motorcycles, where air flows over fins to cool the engine block. Other applications include electronics, industrial machinery, and even some building ventilation systems. While effective for many scenarios, ilmaanjäähdytys may not be sufficient for high-power or densely packed components that generate excessive heat, where more advanced cooling methods like liquid cooling might be necessary.
