iliofemoralis
The iliofemoralis muscle is a part of the anterior thigh musculature. It originates from the anterior inferior iliac spine and extends inferiorly to insert onto the patella, blending with the quadriceps femoris tendon. Its primary action is hip flexion and knee extension. Specifically, it contributes to the anterior tilt of the pelvis when the femur is fixed. When the femur is mobile, it acts synergistically with other hip flexors to lift the thigh. It also plays a role in stabilizing the hip joint. The iliofemoralis is innervated by the femoral nerve. It is a relatively small muscle compared to the other quadriceps muscles, but it is crucial for dynamic movements involving the hip and thigh. Its function is essential for activities such as walking, running, and climbing. Damage or weakness in the iliofemoralis can lead to difficulties in these movements and may affect gait patterns.
